Dr James Hand

Associate Head (Research & Innovation)

Faculty of Business and Law

School of Law

I joined the University of Portsmouth in 2003, was appointed Associate Senior Lecturer in 2007 and was appointed Reader in Law (0.5FTE) in September 2017. I am one of the Associate Heads (Research) at the University of Portsmouth's School of Law.

My research focuses particularly on discrimination law, but I have also published on such topics as Lords Reform ("Lords Reform"), the role of the attorney-general ("The Role of the Attorney-General"), and on the Compensation Culture ("The Compensation Culture"). My Journal of Law and Society article on the latter has been cited in a number of journals and texts, as well as in the Hamlyn Law Lectures (2010), the Master of the Rolls's Holdsworth Lecture (2012), and in a lecture by Sir Stephen Sedley to the Faculty of Advocates (2015).

I am also, as of Summer 2023, one of the three Co-Editors of the International Journal of Discrimination and the Law.

My current research interests include:

  • The Equality Act 2010
  • Diversity within the legal profession
  • House of Lords reform
  • The Research Excellence Framework

The University repository lists my publications here.
