Navigating Challenges in Transgender and Non-binary Workplace Inclusion Research: Insights from Interdisciplinary Research

EVENT BLURB
EVENT BLURB
Currently, researching Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) is increasingly polarised and facing a ‘backlash’ in particular settings. So, how can we cope with some of the difficulties this presents and still progress meaningful inclusion research? In this session, Rosa and Luke will share their experiences of collaborating on interdisciplinary research about transgender and non-binary workplace inclusion.
Together, they’ll also discuss the unique challenges of working in this field over recent times, and how they have responded to emergent tensions. They will also talk about the different approaches to reflective practice they have engaged in to make sense of these experiences, and the insights this has provided them with. As part of the session, they also invite researchers to share any similar concerns or experiences, and reflect on how we can move forwards. What are the most effective strategies to positively influence policy and practice whilst maintaining our integrity as informed researchers?

Speaker details

Professor Luke Fletcher (he/him)

is Professor of Psychology and Human Resource Management at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Luke comes from a more traditional ‘business school’ background, specialising in research around meaningful work, worker wellbeing and engagement at work. In the last 8 years or so he has focused much more on workplace inclusion, particularly around LGBTQ+ peoples’ experiences at work and in business, and has published a number of studies on these aspects (with amazing collaborators such as Rosa) in outlets such as The International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Managerial Psychology, International Small Business Journal, and Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.

Dr Rosa Marvell (she/her)

is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Portsmouth. She began working on trans and non-binary inclusion nearly a decade ago, beginning within policy research contexts. Her work has included developing evidence-based good practice guidance for Acas and the CIPD, and collaborating with Professor Luke Fletcher on work around transgender allyship and workplace trans inclusion research reflexivity.
