I am a Professor in the School of Organizations, Systems, and People. My specialization lies in the 'people' dimensions of work and management, with a particular focus on the emotional, sensory, and aesthetic aspects of well-being and motivation in the workplace.
Previously, I served as Associate Head (Research) for the School of Organization Studies and HRM (2018-2022) and held Professorial positions at Cardiff University and the University of Essex.
I am currently the co-chair of the Association of Electronic Music's Diversity and Inclusion working group, joint series editor for the Palgrave Series in Business, Arts, and the Humanities, and an editor of the journal Organizational Aesthetics and the Routledge Companion to Visual Organization. I have secured research grants from prestigious institutions such as the ESRC, British Academy, and The Leverhulme Trust.
As a University of Portsmouth alumnus, I graduated from the BA(Hons) Business Studies program with first-class honors in 1999. My interest in employment issues for those working in emotionally demanding environments led me to pursue a PhD on workplace fun, which I completed in 2005 while raising my two sons.
My research revolves around the relationships between aesthetics and organizations at conceptual, methodological, and empirical levels. Conceptually, I explore how work and management can be viewed as aesthetic endeavors, fulfilling emotional needs through sensory experiences in the workplace.
My early research focused on investigating 'an aesthetic ethic' of work, examining how modern-day workers value excitement and 'cool' experiences from their occupations, and exploring the range of management techniques developed to meet those demands.
Currently, my primary research interest lies in gender imbalance in digital-creative industries, on which I conducted research as a Leverhulme Trust Fellow from 2019-2021.
I am the module lead and main lecturer on the final year undergraduate module 'Managing Equality and Diversity at Work'. Previously, I led the final year undergraduate 'business research project' module and taught on the first-year undergraduate 'Managing People in Organizations' module.
