Welcome message from Centre directors
Welcome to the University of Portsmouth Advancement of Equality, Gender, and Inclusion Studies (AEGIS) Center website.
Our mission is to generate sustained world-leading research on equality across disciplines that will have transformative societal impact, through influencing the creation, interpretation, and amelioration of legal, economic, and social norms on equality and non-discrimination nationally and internationally.
Drawing on disciplinary and methodological strengths from across the University we will build research capacity internally across career levels, and externally with partners. Existing research groups and successful research collaborations will aid this aim. The centre will expand outputs through a focus on mentoring, sharing knowledge and contacts, data gathering (including supporting non-academic partners in building momentum for change), and reinforcing reciprocal relationships. The vision and goal for this Centre is to grow further partnerships through increased evidence and research capacity to end gender and social injustices and promote inclusiveness and diversity.
Objectives of the new centre
The centre will support the University’s EDI ambitions by promoting a vibrant and engaging community of learning driven by world learning research focused on inclusivity and diversity.
In line with the university’s educational strategic aim of meeting changing demand & widening participation, the centre will become an institutional destination of choice for Masters, Doctoral, and post-Doctoral researchers on interdisciplinary and intersectional gender and equality studies.
The centre will provide a critical mass of expertise to support the development of a new DL Masters programme in Gender, Equality, and Diversity. This timely Masters programme will be a first step towards the Centre’s efforts in addressing the growing societal need to educate the next generations of leaders in equality, diversity, and inclusion.
A central objective of the centre is to contribute to learning, teaching, and the delivery of graduate hallmarks. This objective will be achieved through activities designed to generate inspiring and life-changing opportunities for students across UG, PG, and PGR levels. The centre will provide new opportunities for students to translate learning into practice through internships, to apply knowledge to ongoing ‘live case studies’ as part of their studies, and engage in debate with professionals across the centre’s network. Combined, these activities will support students in acquiring a global mindset- a core graduate hallmark.
With a focus on DL, the centre will support UoP’s ambitions to become a global leader in the provision of digital education on equality and non-discrimination, building on existing inter-institutional collaborations.
